Substance AbusE - Transtional Housing

HAS believes that a stable recovery environment enhances the potential for sustained recovery from substance abuse/dependence. With support from a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, we were able to open a state-of-the-art extended residential program for homeless recovering adult males.

Our goal is to provide a stable housing environment complemented by aggressive case management to assist the residents in achieving independence and self-sufficiency with enhanced possibilities for future success.

The physical plant meets the most stringent city, state and federal codes and regulations for comfort and safety. The program meets all applicable OASA regulations for Recovery Homes, and all HUD regulations for Supported Transitional Housing. The participants have every opportunity to experience the benefits of living a sober life. The underlying philosophy of the House is to foster individual accountability and responsibility, to promote the interactive transaction based nature of our society, and the need for spirituality to guide the recovery process.

The criteria for admission include completion of detoxification or residential services, active participation in outpatient treatment, and a commitment to sustain aftercare activities. There are specific residential rules designed to instill structure and discipline in the recovery process. In addition, the case managers will link all participants with services within our vast network of collaborating agencies.

The house has several levels of privileges determined by the progress measured in specific performance areas such as: sustained treatment involvement, participation in peer support activities, vocational/educational achievement, and other areas of personal growth. The case managers teach basic living skills, including budgeting, savings and checking account balancing, problem solving, stress management, and coping skills.

Discharge criteria includes concern for the overall safety of all participants and staff, progress toward achievement of stated objectives, and demonstrated ability to cope in independent living. Participation may last from 90 days to 12 months, depending on individual needs and circumstances.
