Adjunctive
Mental Health
It
is not unusual for clients suffering from a substance
abuse disorder to also have emotional/psychological
problems that are intertwined with their substance
abuse. Often once the client discontinues their substance
use, and begins to address the problems in their lives
much of the emotional stress lessens, and they are
better able to reach their life goals. There are clients
however that have emotional problems that exist independently
of their substance use.
These
clients continue to experience anxiety, depression,
and other emotional problems even in the absence of
using substances. These problems are often so severe
that the client will use substances to lessen the
emotional pain which reinforces the need to abuse
substances. This cycle can prevent the client from
reaching his/her goals for healthier living.
"Adjunctive
Mental Health Services" are mental
health treatment options that help to address the
emotional problems that the client experiences, while
the client receives traditional substance abuse services.
These services are called "Mental Illness/Substance
Abuse" (M.I.S.A.) services. They include Psychiatric/Psychological
assessments, medication if warranted, ongoing medication
monitoring, and individual counseling as needed so
that both problem areas are addressed simultaneously.
This combination of services gives the client a much
better chance at success and better health.
Thus,
when clients come into our Substance Abuse services
we automatically assess that person's emotional well-being
as part of the overall evaluation. We continue to
monitor that aspect of the client throughout the course
of treatment. If it is suspected that a mental health
condition exists that requires further attention a
Psychiatric/Psychological evaluation is requested
and if acceptable scheduled for the client.
