Prevention
Prevention
activities are designed to organize and empower communities
where local area residents are at high risk for substance
related problems. HAS began prevention services in
1980 at a time when such activities were receiving
relatively little attention and very little designated
funding within the substance abuse field.
A
major portion of our organization's prevention efforts
is presently involved with comprehensive substance
abuse prevention activities. The comprehensive prevention
program promotes individual and social change to create
healthy families and communities with a focus on issues
related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse.
Through
our prevention programs, targeted at youth age 12
-17, we provide a school-based program and a drop-in
center. Services include a mentoring program, tutoring,
anger management, along with education and information
on various aspects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
We also provide recreational activities.
All
of these services help to develop healthier life management
skills for our clients. In addition we create and
support positive alternatives for families and provide
parenting skills training and Teen Reach services.
We also provide leadership training to community members
and offer support groups for parents and youth.
